bsmall's Young Language Learner Competition

Open to young linguists aged 6-11, the b small Young Language Learner Award 2022 aims to support and encourage language learning through story-writing. Created by independent children’s publisher b small publishing, this popular award has previously run in 2014 and 2017, and returns for the third time in 2022.

Children can choose from a story or comic template, provided for free on the b small website, and are invited to pen their own foreign language story in the foreign language of their choice. The award not only develops language skills, but also hopes to encourage fun through storytelling.

In previous years, parents found the award a brilliant activity to encourage language learning over the school holidays, and teachers also used the award as a classroom resource to provide on-going engaging and creative activity for all levels in their foreign language teaching.

The theme for this year’s competition is ADVENTURE. Open to submission for all languages.

Please see https://bsmall.co.uk/ylla for:

• Story templates – including a story template and comic template for children to choose from and write their story in.

• Notes for teachers/parents/tutors – hints and tips and to aid parents and teachers in guiding their young language learners, as well as previous winner examples.

• Downloadable entry form to submit the finished book.

The closing date for entries is Mon 26 September and the winner will be announced in the first two weeks of October. b small will publish the winning entry as a PDF on their website, and the winner will also receive 10 language learning books from b small, with 2nd and 3rd runners up receiving 5 books and 2 books respectively.
