Writing Magical Stories with Andy Sagar

How do authors create the magical worlds in which they set their stories? Join Andy Sagar, author of the enchanting Yesterday Crumb series, for a magnificent workshop in writing all things fantastical!

In this session, Andy teaches everything there is to know about world-building, or how to create imaginative settings. He shares his best writing tip – how to combine ordinary and extraordinary things to build fantasy worlds. This event is interactive, and by the end, children will have created a rich magical setting of their own, ready for telling stories in.

Andy also shows children how authors draw on real-world influences when writing books. In particular, teaching them all about the history of witchcraft in England – a key influence in his own delightful books. He holds a PhD in the history of witchcraft in English law, and is deeply passionate about teaching this fascinating subject.

Once they’ve learned everything there is to know about world-building, Andy then shows how authors go about creating characters and weaving plots – so children have all the tools needed to write wonderful tales!

Finally, Andy will hold a Q&A to give children the opportunity to ask any questions they might have about what it is like being an author.

This event is perfect for a middle-grade audience, and available as a presentation or a workshop, online or in person – so don’t miss out on this spectacular opportunity!

Yesterday Crumb and the Storm in a Teacup follows the story of a girl named Yesterday, who was born with fox ears that have cursed her to a lonely life working in the circus. But she is about to escape into the adventure of a lifetime when she learns that she’s a witch who’s lost her magic. Taken in by Miss Dumpling the flamboyant tea witch, Yesterday is introduced to a magical, walking teashop filled with fantastical customers, a flying teapot turtle called Pascal and powerful spells in every teacup! Yesterday starts to rediscover her magic and to feel a sense of belonging. But a mysterious figure of darkness is working hard to ensure her new life comes crashing down – and it all starts with a deadly shard of ice in Yesterday’s heart… But there’s nothing that can’t be solved with a pot of tea, a slice of cake and a BIG dash of magic! The first in a new fantasy series for readers aged 8-12, about a girl with fox ears who has never fitted in.
