The groundbreaking and bestselling first Spinster Club novel from YA star Holly Bourne – ““A brutal and brilliant takedown of how we talk about mental illness, feminism, and friendship.”“ The Guardian
All Evie wants is to be normal. And now that she’s almost off her meds and at a new college where no one knows her as the-girl-who-went-nuts, there’s only one thing left to tick off her list…
But relationships can mess with anyone’s head – something Evie’s new friends Amber and Lottie know only too well. The trouble is, if Evie won’t tell them her secrets, how can they stop her making a huge mistake?
I loved this book!
Fast paced, realistic central voice Great focus on OCD Not 100% sure it needs YA warnings
A fantastic book. It clearly shows the complexities of mental health struggles and how quickly they can take hold. It also highlights the difficulties of teen life and the importance of friendship. A must read. Not suitable for younger readers.
I really enjoyed it - it was another book that I’ve been meaning to read and am so glad I did. I will definitely be recommending it. I loved Evie and her friends Amber and Lottie and thought Holly wrote very convincingly from the point of view of person with OCD, so much so that I wondered if she had experienced it first hand. I loved the humour and the romance and the discussion about feminism.
A brilliant book which I would recommend to all young adult readers. The story about a 16 year old girl with OCD who just wants to live a normal teenage life is both heart-breaking and funny throughout and certainly presents an insightful look into mental illness from an author who has really done her research. Full of the characters' experiences of feminism and friendship, plus first love, this book is an engrossing read which informs and entertains on a subject that all too often is not fully understood.
Inspirable fantastic book about Evie's relationships and friends which manage to teach us lots of lessons and inspire to carry on reading through the author's use of awesome protagonists and English devices!
This is a fantastic look in to me tail health and the way we perceive people and their illnesses, and whilst this is a serious subject next whilst h Bourne handles fantastically, she softens the seriousness with humour without dismissing the message.
This is a fantastic look in to mental health and the way we perceive people and their illnesses, and whilst this is a serious subject which Bourne handles fantastically, she softens the seriousness with humour without dismissing the message. My biggest worry about this book was that after dealing with all her ups and downs, the author would allow Evie to become miraculously cured because she had found some great friends and a boy whiskies her. Because that is just not how it works. Thankfully that wasn't the case.
It was a good book. It does have some swearing and things that younger kids may not understand or get upset by so I would recommend this to people that are 12 and above. Overall it's a good read.
This book is so emotional and supports feminists all around the globe. Can be for those teenagers who love friendships.
This was an interesting read everyone should read this book. I recommend it to teens. 5 stars and i love the author
"This is one of the best portrayals of OCD that I’ve ever read.” - Quote from young person at the Southbank YA Weekender
OMG this is one of my favorites. Everyone should read this its so amazing, written by such a great author. All the books are great. For older readers. There should be a 6 star button omg
I loved this book because it addressed mental illness in a realistic and understandable way.
Portrays the struggle of having life long illnesses such as OCD and anxiety issues.
A story telling the hardship and burden of being diagnosed with OCD and anxiety worries. Evie has two very close friends but cannot find the right time to tell them about her diagnosis. However, when something goes wrong with a boy from college causing a relapse everything will change and she will have to face the truth and confess to her friends.
OMG I love this book it is so amazing I'm halfway trough and regret not bringing it home from school
I think this book is an amazing read and will make you Denver want to put the book down. I found the book very educational and thought me a lot about the illness OCD. I think it is suitable to teenagers as it is very relatable and offers lots of advice. I definitely recommend this book.
Meet Evelyn, a young teenage girl who happens to have a secret that controls her. I will not tell you too much of the book because it is amazingly good. The author has captured the perspective of a protagonist really well. It's thought-provoking and a great page-turner. You feel like you are actually there inside the world with other characters, and it feels so real. I know that sound perverse but to be on an honest side, the author has created a world which helps paint the picture of what everyone goes through; they search and try to understand what "normal" technically means; they try hard to be like everyone else without showing too many hints: they even try to pretend to be someone else entirely. We have been in that situation. Whatever choice we make can have a consequence, and we cannot take always control what other people think but what truly matters is about being yourself; it shouldn't be the question of who's better than you; it doesn't matter what you look like on the outside; it's the question of your wellbeing and making sure that you are true to yourself. PLEASE READ THIS AWESOME BOOK!!! IT DEFINITELY NEEDS TO BE CHECKED OUT BY EVERYONE!!
