If you're working with volunteers for the Summer Reading Challenge, check out these resources to help you use the volunteer packs effectively to engage young people in the challenge.
The volunteer packs will include:
You can download a PDF copy of the Reading Hack volunteering essentials booklet above, to familiarise yourself with the pack before it arrives. The booklet is designed to help the young volunteer track and articulate the skills they obtain from volunteering, as well as set their volunteer schedule, record their hours and track their reads.
There are three main skills that have been defined for the volunteers - communication, organisation & workplace and teamwork. Where capacity allows there's also an optional skill for Social Reporting. Volunteers can assign and complete two tasks to gain each skill, use the booklet to track their progress, and then login online to receive badges of excellence, a certificate of achievement and a downloadable letter of reference for future employers.
Volunteering essentials website
A volunteering essentials website will be available for young volunteers to use from April 2015, which will feature competitions, activity ideas, and a place for young people to gain skills advocacy and track their progress. For reference only, the volunteering essentials website 2014 is available to view.
