This summer our annual Summer Reading Challenge created thousands of fantastic volunteering opportunities across the UK. See how some our the young Summer Reading Challenge volunteers from Westminster and Southwark libraries got on in the video above.
This summer thousands of young people improved their reading and helped out their communities by volunteering in local libraries to help run the Summer Reading Challenge. We were delighted to be invited by Westminster Libraries in London, which worked with over 100 volunteers, to help celebrate the young volunteers' achievements at Pimlico Library with librarians and a local dance troupe. The volunteers were awarded their certificates and the dance group performed a celebratory piece and the volunteers really enjoyed the opportunity to chat with volunteers from other libraries.
Another amazing group of young volunteers were amongst the guests at our Creative Development Day on 17 September. Hosted in partnership with ASCEL and Arts Council England, the event brought together libraries and arts organisations for a day of discussion and brainstorming to stimulate creative collaboration between the libraries and arts groups. Young volunteers from organisations such as Colchester & Ipswich Museums, Corali Dance Company, and of course our very own Reading Activists Gateshead, presented their creative projects and explained how their projects worked with both libraries and arts organisations. The volunteers were very much the stars of the show - their creativity, originality and energy were truly inspiring.
Throughout the summer we've been hearing uplifting stories from people who decided to give up some of their time to volunteer over the summer. James made a brilliant 'Poetree' that was well used over the summer, Jodie managed to get a job as a result of the experience she'd gained by volunteering for the Summer Reading Challenge and four young people from Southwark ended up meeting Nick Hurd MP, minister for Civil Society, to share their ideas about how more young people can be encouraged to volunteer in libraries.
There are volunteering opportunities for young people through our Reading Activists programme. To find out more about volunteering please contact Nici West.
