Choo Waihong was a corporate lawyer with top law firms in Singapore and California before she took early retirement in 2006 to travel and write. She lived for six years with the Mosuo tribe and now spends half the year with them in Yunnan, China.
Our library reading panel enjoyed learning about The Mosuo tribe from the The Kingdom of Women – here are some of their comments:
“This was a fantastic book. Well-written, engaging and thoroughly interesting.”
“The subject of this book is the Mosuo tribe who live in a remote area of Yunnan province in China. It is a remarkable tribe whose customs are radically different to the vast majority of other societies for two reasons – 1) the power is held by the women in what the author calls a matriarchal and matrilineal society and 2) there is no such thing as marriage.”
