The Reading Agency Presents: EUREK-HER! Inspirational Women in STEM
This Non-fiction November, your class or child can join award-winning author Frances Durkin for a free 60-minute workshop on some of the extraordinary women, incredible inventions and astonishing discoveries which are featured in her book, EUREK-HER: Stories of Inspirational Women in STEM. It’s perfect for children in Key Stage 2.
Did you know that the earliest chemist we know of was a woman who lived in ancient Mesopotamia?
How about the fact that cosmic rays were discovered by an Indian physicist whose colleagues told her she couldn’t do her job because she was a woman?
And then there’s Margarete Steiff, who overcame childhood polio to become a brilliant businesswoman who gave the world the teddy bear.
This session will explore the objects and ideas that exist all around us, but that we wouldn’t have if not for the brilliance of a group of women who did so much more than was expected of their gender. From cuddly toys to paper bags, nuclear fission to dark matter, Frances will explore why so many significant women are often neglected when we tell the histories of scientific progress and why it is important to make sure that they are not forgotten.
Frances’ workshop will last approximately 40 minutes, and will be followed by a Q&A.
Plus! We have a copy of the book available for the first ten teachers, librarians or parents who sign up to attend with their class, group or child.
