The youngest winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Malala Yousafzai, is amongst the authors featured on the 2016 Galaxy® Quick Reads title list, which is announced today.
Quick Reads celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2016 with a diverse collection of titles which will be published on 4 February, and sponsored by Galaxy® for a sixth year:
- Agatha Christie (edited by Sophie Hannah and John Curran) - The Double Clue: Poirot Short Stories
- Ann Cleeves - Too Good to be True
- Lucy Diamond - A Baby at the Beach Café
- Veronica Henry (editor) - The Anniversary: Ten Tempting Stories From Ten Bestselling Authors
- Andy McNab - On the Rock
- Malala Yousafzai with Christina Lamb - I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban (An Abridged Edition)
One in six adults in the UK struggles with reading, whilst one in three does not read for pleasure, and Quick Reads will next year continue its work to break down barriers to reading. Ninety-seven per cent of literacy practitioners report that using Quick Reads has been effective at raising learners' confidence to read, whilst 95% say that the books have been effective at improving readers' literacy skills.
Quick Reads joins The Reading Agency
The reveal of the 2016 titles comes as we announce that Quick Reads is to join The Reading Agency. We have already worked with Quick Reads extensively through Reading Ahead and World Book Night so we are delighted to have them on board.
In 2016, Quick Reads - which has published over 140 titles, sold or distributed more than 4.7 million copies and enabled over 3.9 million library loans since it was founded in 2006 - will continue to work with literacy practitioners, prisons, librarians and retailers to bring the benefits and pleasure of reading to everyone.
A broad range of titles
The broad range of 2016 titles has been selected to ensure that those with lower literacy skills can enjoy works from today's leading writers in an accessible format. The inclusion of Malala, the Pakistani activist for female education, also shines a spotlight on the empowerment that reading can bring to people's lives.
The short story collection, edited by Veronica Henry, plays host to a range of talented and well-loved authors, including Phillipa Gregory, Matt Haig, Jenny Colgan, Rowan Coleman and TV presenter Richard Madeley. Sophie Hannah, who penned a Galaxy® Quick Read in 2015, also returns this year as editor of Agatha Christie's The Double Clue.
