Top author Paula Daly met staff from Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust on 12 December, after they won a nationwide prize draw for workplaces who have successfully run the Six Book Challenge.
Paula Daly, who writes thrillers set in the Lake District, visited the Rheged Centre in Penrith to present certificates to some of the 50 Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust staff who successfully completed the 2014 Six Book Challenge and to talk to them about her writing.
Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust won our annual prize draw, in association with the Campaign for Learning, for workplaces that have run the Challenge successfully.
Partnership with publishers
We arranged the visit from Paula Daly in partnership with publishers Transworld, who provided copies of Paula's book Keep Your Friends Close for staff to read in advance of her visit. Representatives from Cumbria Libraries also attended the event as they worked with the NHS Trust library to provide a wide range of titles for Six Book Challenge participants to choose from.
Paula Daly said:
I'm delighted to be part of the Six Book Challenge and excited to meet and chat to everyone from Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Books change lives. Books changed my life enormously and continue to do so every day. The more I read, the happier I am. It's that simple.
Genevieve Clarke, Six Book Challenge programme manager, said:
Well done Cumbria! We've got an increasing number of NHS Trusts taking part with hospital staff, appreciating the chance to challenge themselves and widen their reading. It's brilliant to be working with the Campaign for Learning and Transworld to offer this prize every year.
Nikki Bridson-Nelson, development lead for Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust's Learning Network said:
As an avid reader of a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction books I was shocked to learn that 35% of adults don't read for pleasure. The Six Book Challenge provided our organisation with a platform to introduce staff to the world of books or perhaps coax individuals who felt that they were 'too busy' to feel that they really do have time to read. I am thrilled that Paula Daly has managed to take the time to meet and congratulate our staff.
The Six Book Challenge can be run in libraries, colleges, workplaces and prisons. Find out more about running the Challenge at your organisation
