We've received some wonderful news! We've been successful in our funding bid to Arts Council England and will continue to be a National Portfolio Organisation during 2015-18. Arts Council England has maintained its level of investment in The Reading Agency and we are very pleased to learn that they have rated us as "outstanding" when assessing how well we can help deliver their goals.
Our bid was ambitious and we have big plans for the future. We currently reach over 1 million people every year but we want to grow and extend our reach, using new forms of engagement and involving people in our inclusive programmes. We will do this with our great partners - public libraries, publishers, charities and other institutions.
Our programmes are designed to help people feel inspired and confident about reading, to encourage them to share their love of reading by joining reading groups and through volunteering and to celebrate the difference reading for pleasure and knowledge makes to all our lives.
Building on recent success
We recently asked World Book Night participants to help us plan for the next 3 years by filling in an evaluation survey. We had a staggering response rate of 57% out of 10,000 givers with 93% of them saying that they were able to reach people who don't regularly read for pleasure or own books. Of those who filled in our receivers' survey, 98% said they were pleased to have been given that title as a gift, and 83% said that receiving the book will encourage them to read more. And it's not just our newest programme which is getting a good response - 810,089 children took part in the 2013 Summer Reading Challenge and we're hoping for at least as many participants this summer. 100,000 adults with mild to moderate mental health issues engaged with Reading Well Books on Prescription its first 3 months. Along with the Society of Chief Librarians, we're currently working on a Reading Well Books on Prescription dementia booklist and public library offer. These are just a few examples of how we're planning to reach more children, young people and adults through our programmes in the coming three years.
With the news of our Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation status we're looking forward to working harder than ever towards giving everyone an equal chance in life by helping people become confident and enthusiastic readers. Because everything changes when we read.
