"I have never been a good reader, never had the concentration to finish a book. I started the Six Book Challenge with Quick Reads and I really enjoyed them. I found them easy to read and they gave me the confidence to move on to other books. I would recommend the Challenge to anyone wanting to get back into reading."
Angela Davies, a cleaner at Ebbw Vale Library, was one of 155 people who completed the Challenge with the support of Blaenau Gwent Libraries in 2012, helping the library service to win a gold award (for having over 150 Challenge completers) from The Reading Agency.
We're very pleased to announce that in 2013, less confident readers in Wales can choose whether to take part in Welsh or English or a mixture of both. Thanks to support from the Welsh Government and Welsh Books Council, we're delighted to offer bilingual materials for the Six Book Challenge in Wales for the first time. The arrival of Her Darllen Chwech marks a new beginning for the scheme in public libraries, colleges, workplaces and prisons across Wales.
Sue White, Principal Librarian at Blaenau Gwent Library said "The Challenge is easy to run, appeals to individuals who never thought libraries were for them and meets all our important agendas at the same time!"
Over 20,000 people take part in the Six Book Challenge each year through libraries, colleges, workplaces and prisons across the UK. Linsey Imms, Learning Services Project Worker for TUC Cymru said, "This project takes a challenge and turns it into a passion. Few things in life inspire people like books and thanks to this scheme, thousands of people are reconnecting to the limitless learning and fulfilment that reading offers."
If you are a librarian or a learning support officer and would like to run the Six Book Challenge at your workplace resources for the 2013 challenge, including the bilingual materials, are now available from the shop.
If you'd like to take part in the Six Book Challenge contact Genevieve.Clarke@readingagency.org.uk who can put you in touch with an organisation in your area who is running it.
