Reading Ahead is the new name for the Six Book Challenge.
A group of Independent Living Skills students at Coleg Llandrillo Cymru in Rhos on Sea in North Wales were rewarded for taking part in the Six Book Challenge earlier this year when they each received a certificate and had their photo taken with Library Resource Manager Andrew Eynon and Learning Resource Assistant Zoe Pinder - pictured above with student Medwyn.
"The students come to college for Steps Part Time Courses which are for people with significant learning disabilities," explains their Personal Tutor Melanie Simpson. "They took the Challenge as part of the Essential Skills Course for Pre-Entry learners. Many of the participants are still developing their reading skills and the Challenge acted as a great incentive with support and guidance on reading materials given by Zoe Pinder from the college library.
"I asked the learners about their interests and Zoe put together a selection of books and reading materials to match these. On the first occasion she brought these to the classroom so that individuals would not be overwhelmed by a huge amount to select from. Following that we made weekly trips to the library with support given to the learners by myself and Learning Support Assistants."
Melanie reports that Shirley, Ceri Ann, Sue and Hywel have all returned to take another Steps Part Time Course in Essential Skills this year and look forward to taking the challenge again. Alex, Sarah and Tammie have all taken up options on full-time Life and Work Skills Courses this year whilst Emilia has moved away and Julie and Medwyn are doing other things.
"The beauty of the Challenge is that we can choose materials that are suitable for the learner to read so we tailor it to each individual," she adds. "Quite a few of our groups are looking forward to the forthcoming year's Reading Challenge and it's become integral to what we do."
We're very grateful to Zoe for sending us these pictures of the completers receiving their certificates.
