Nina is a student at Warrington & Vale Royal College. She explains how Reading Ahead has helped her in her studies.
How did you first hear about Reading Ahead? What thoughts crossed your mind when you first heard about the programme?
I first heard about Reading Ahead in 2017 when I first came to the college. I didn't really want to get involved at that time, and I often just pretended to read.
Have you always enjoyed reading?
No, I have always struggled to read as I have dyslexia. I struggled with stories as I didn't understand what I'd read.
What did you think about reading before Reading Ahead?
It was a struggle and I tried to avoid it.
When you started Reading Ahead, what did you enjoy about it?
When I took part in Reading Ahead this year I found it more enjoyable. My teacher helped me find books I enjoyed and I could take books back if I didn't like them. I was helped to find books that were dyslexia friendly and for the first time I actually enjoyed reading. Having a good teacher to help makes it so different. We also listened to stories being read in class and that makes it fun too.
Do you think it has helped you with your English GCSE, if so can you explain how?
It has helped me to read the sources we are given in the exam. Before I used to skim read and try and find the answers in the text. Now I am more confident because I can focus for 15 to 20 minutes close reading the source texts, and this has helped me make sense of the texts and the exam questions and given me more confidence to answer the questions.
What would be your advice to any student who is not sure about whether to commit to Reading Ahead?
Reading helps your concentration but also can develop your confidence. It helps you approach life in a more confident way. I've just got a better part time job which I've just started, and this is because I'm better able to deal with things I have to read and prepare for interviews.
