With six new Quick Reads being published in February 2020 we caught up with librarian Stella Chevalier on the role Quick Reads play in The Preschool Parents' Book Club in South London.
How have you used Quick Reads in your book club?
The Preschool Parents Book Club is an adult day-time book club for parents of young children. We offer a choice of two books at our monthly meetings, with one of the books being a Quick Read. The short length of Quick Reads allows everyone in the group to have read one book by our next meeting which means everyone can take part in book discussions.
They have been a great tool for building a reading habit for time-limited, busy parents and are a useful ice-breaker in group discussions. We really enjoyed reading I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai as well as the crime/mystery Quick Reads by Ann Cleeves, Sophie Hannah, Vaseem Khan, Agatha Christie and Val McDermid.
Why have Quick Reads become so popular with your book club?
Quick Reads provide our group with a variety of superbly written short stories by accomplished authors covering a variety of genres. This means there is always a different genre and author to discover. Being short stories (or collections of stories in some cases) meant that we were able to try out new authors and genres that we may not have had the time or energy to complete if they had been longer.
I am thrilled to hear that Quick Reads are back for 2020 with such a super selection and I'm deeply grateful to Jojo Moyes for supporting the programme. More great short stories for 2020 means more adult reading opportunities, bringing with it the well-being and life-changing benefits of reading to everyone.
Book club member Albertina says: "As a new mother I'd been stuck in the middle of the same book I started while pregnant, feeling daunted and exhausted. Discovering Quick Reads made finishing a book seem possible and before I knew it I had rediscovered reading again and was enjoying much needed entertainment and escapism. Now I love carrying a Quick Read in my bag for those in between moments at the park. Thank you The Reading Agency and Mum Me Books for helping me turn the page."
Book club member Amanda says: "As a new mum everything was always started with great ambition and then abandoned. Reading felt like an impossible task. Then along came Quick Reads which made the impossible possible once again. They gave me time for just me, even if it was only a few precious moments to read a handful of pages, and a sense of accomplishment at a time when I really needed it. Thank you Pre-School Parents' Book Club and thank you The Reading Agency."
