Reading has always been a big part of my life. I wore the 'bookworm' label with pride as a child, and I vividly remember my anguish on the day my local library instituted a 15-book borrowing maximum. These days I continue to push the lending limits at my local and institutional libraries. My doctoral and postdoctoral research in English and American Studies has meant that I'm most often found reading non-fiction, but I also particularly enjoy reading works of the Harlem Renaissance and modern black freedom movement. I view reading, in part, as a resistive act: it not only helps to open new worlds but also to push and shape the boundaries of our own. I am excited to be part of an organisation working to prove the power of reading and particularly reading for pleasure.
