Recommended reading material and accessibility

We recognise that some adults find reading difficult due to accessibility needs, such as dyslexia, visual impairment or mental health issues.

When selecting items to be added to Find a Read we consider the layout of the text on the page and always aim for the font size to be at least 12 point, making it more readable.

The items on Find a Read are accessible to readers with literacy levels of Level 2 and below.

Readers can also find reading materials in different formats, to suit their needs:

  • Audio - digital and on CD
  • Books - traditional printed texts
  • Ebooks - some which can be used with screen readers and where text sizes can be changed
  • Games - interactive and some using audio alongside text
  • Large print - where a font size of 16 point or higher is used
  • Newspapers and Magazines - short pieces of text with images
  • Websites

Readers with accessibility needs may also prefer reading short stories or illustrated texts.

Where items are available in more than one format, such as the Quick Reads titles, we have tried to include all versions so readers can choose their preferred format.

If you have any feedback about the type of reading materials we have included in Find a Read, please do contact us.
